The East Knows Something the West Is Still Learning.
Dear investor.
Gold at $4,117 today. Silver at $59.19. This week gold did something that caught the market's attention: it rallied despite rising Treasury yields, a stronger dollar and elevated oil prices. Assets that would normally pressure gold. The metal ignored all of them and moved higher.
Wells Fargo's head of global equities and real assets strategy said it plainly this week: the risk/reward in gold has flipped decisively in the investor's favor. After a correction of more than 20% from January's all-time high, he sees roughly $500 of downside and $1,500 of upside from current levels. Their year-end target: $5,300 to $5,500. Their 2027 target: $5,800 to $6,000. "As an investor building portfolio exposure," he said, "that is a very attractive risk-reward proposition."
Schroders confirmed this week what the data has been showing for months. The East/West dynamic has returned. Eastern emerging market central banks are buying aggressively at current prices for structural, long-term reasons. Western investors have been selling for cyclical, short-term ones. The pattern is not new. What is notable is who has historically been right.
China's central bank increased its purchases sevenfold from February to June as prices declined. From 2 tonnes when gold was above $5,000 to 15 tonnes at $4,250. Schroders called it "an indication of what is viewed as value in Beijing." The National Bank of Poland, one of the most vocal advocates for gold as a reserve asset, said this week that gold is not a fixation. It is "a strategy of financial sovereignty."
Silver at $59.19 continues to carry the most compelling long-term setup in the precious metals complex. The supply deficit is structural. Industrial demand does not respond to short-term rate cycles. And the gold-to-silver ratio remains at historically elevated levels that have preceded silver's most significant moves.
The math this week is straightforward. The window IMG prepared you for remains open.
